A little bit of history ... K6 TELEPHONE KIOSK AND GPO WALL BOX
One of our
most cherished elements about the pub is the rare configuration of a K6 telephone kiosk and a 1950's GPO wall box, which
stand side-by-side, adjacent to the beer garden. Together, they form a romantic, enchanting sense of times gone by, a joint-symbol
of the 'high-tech' communication of yesteryear. In these days of instant messaging, sms, twitters, tweets and twits,
we sometimes yearn for the slower pace of past decades - a letter from afar, or a long distance phonecall. We know they're
only small, and insignificant to most people, but we love our pair of perfect pals. Here is what a representative from the
Letter Box Study Group had to say about them.
LBSG Spokesperson: 'You are certainly lucky to have both a wall box and a K6 telephone kiosk side by side, as they
provide an excellent photo opportunity. The wall box carries
the current Queen's cipher and would have been supplied to the GPO as it then was sometime between late 1952 and 1955.
It is a size B wall box and was made by W.T.Allen of London, and cast at their foundry in Mansfield. We have details of over
90% of the Royal Mail letter boxes in use in the UK on our files, and your box is one of just over 900 of its design that
we know about'.
